Engage with social media in a healthy and effective manner

The Navigating Social Media workshop is designed to educate and upskill secondary students in years 7-9, equipping them with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to engage with social media in both a healthy and effective manner.

This program empowers students to identify and combat the potentially harmful aspects of social media whilst simultaneously embracing and utilising its positive features.

Through interactive and engaging activities, students gain a deeper understanding of the risks and benefits which social platforms can present, building their capacity to make informed and responsible choices in their online experiences.

Session Outcomes

What is social media and how is it shaping us?

Students are given an understanding of the potentially harmful effects social media can have, including topics such as algorithms, misinformation, unregulated content, and constant comparison. They will discuss the role of social media in shaping their identity and how they see themselves.

Protecting ourselves online by improving our practices

Students are provided with technical skills that not only bring awareness to these effects, but also build their capacity to become more conscious of their daily digital habits.

How can we be active participants in improving our social media

Students are educated on how to manage and protect their own social media pages to curate positive online experiences.

“The workshop helped me understand the impact that the phone has had on our daily lives and helped me to realise different cues and strategies I can use to reduce my screen time when I am around others. I have taken away a few things which I definitely will try tonight.”

Lachlan, Year 9 Student

“I had fun doing the Ctrl Your Scroll workshop. We learnt about what social media is and why it is important to be aware of what we are doing online. I am going to try and be more conscious of how I use my phone and social media.”

Tessa, Year 8 Student
